Some had been predicting the weak US GDP growth number of 0.2% (like the Atlanta Fed GDP Model) although at the start of the year predictions were considerably more rosy. Note this is the earliest estimate for US GDP.
What does this mean for Ontario's GDP for the first quarter of 2015? In 2014 first quarter GDP growth in Ontario was 0.6%, 3.2% in the second, 4.0% in the third and 2.5% in the fourth (all annualized).
For comparison in the US for 2014, first quarter growth was -2.1%, second quarter growth was 4.6%, third quarter 5.0% and 2.2% in the fourth quarter. Obviously there is a large amount of correlation there although the US decreased quite massively in the first quarter of 2014 while in Ontario, growth was only weak. Nonetheless the US first quarter of 2015 GDP of 0.2% isn't a good number for Ontario which depends on the US to a much greater extent for exports than other Canadian provinces.
Expect an Ontario number below 2.0% annualized at the least.

Ontario 2015 Fourth Quarter GDP Out, 2.5%, Full Year 2014 2.2%
With the 2015-2016 Ontario budget being released, the Ontario finance ministry got around to releasing the fourth quarter of 2014 GDP data on their quarterly accounts site.
The fourth quarter GDP growth number was 0.6% or 2.5% annualized. 2.5% is a relatively strong number given Ontario's GDP numbers since the Mike Harris hay days, although it was down sharply from the second and third quarter numbers which were 3.2% and 4.0% respectively annualized. Note that Canada's fourth quarter GDP number was 2.4% annualized, which is almost the same as Ontario's. The US GDP number was slightly less at 2.2%.
However first quarter growth was only 0.6% annualized, which dragged down the full 2014 Ontario GDP number reported in the quarterly accounts which was only 2.2%. The accounts page helpfully points out this is the strongest annual growth since 2010 (in 2013 GDP growth was only 1.3%) . I'll point out that the most recent provincial population growth rate was 0.9% annually, so for 2.2% a big portion of that was from population growth rather than productivity growth.
Some noteworthy tidbits from the quarterly accounts report and my comments:
"Capital spending on machinery and equipment rose 0.7% in 2014, after declining in the previous two years" - well that's obviously better than negative, but isn't great news for Ontario's productivity.
"Investment in intellectual property products was down 2.1% in 2014, following a 3.4% decrease in 2013." - this isn't particularly good for productivity either.
"Household disposable income rose 3.2%, after increasing 2.7% in 2013. Ontario’s household savings rate declined to 3.2% from 4.6% in 2013." - that's pretty good growth for disposable income, but the fact that Ontario's savings rate went down from last year to truly sad levels I think is a testament to the low growth housing bubble Ontario finds itself in.
"Businesses added $5.4 billion ($2007) to non-farm inventories in the fourth quarter of 2014, after accumulating $1.7 billion worth of stocks in the third quarter." - that doesn't bode well for first quarter GDP growth if there's a lot of inventories to draw down on.
"Exports rose 0.4% in the fourth quarter, following a strong 3.0% advance in the third quarter. Imports expanded 1.5%, after increasing 1.0% in the third quarter." - one would think with the low dollar that exports will be more impressive. If car manufacturing in Ontario is lower in the first quarter of 2015 due to retooling and shutdowns, that isn't going to be good for exports and GDP.
The Ontario first quarter GDP number should be interesting. The US number looks to be weak, similar to the first quarter of 2014 (when Ontario's was also weak). I think there's a pretty good assumption that the first quarter of Ontario will have weak numbers, but now the main question is if the second quarter is going to be weak too.

Why Doesn't the Media Report the Year on Year Ontario Hydro Increases? On Peak Electricity Pricing Up 19.2% Year on Year
With news that the electricity price increases coming May 1st for Ontario will be particularly high, I'm wondering why the media never reports the year over year increases. Ontario power prices are raised every May 1st and every November first, but the media usually only reports on the six month increase and doesn't bother looking at the yearly increase, which would be useful for comparing to Ontario's inflation rate.
This CBC article has the price increases coming May 1st and this Toronto Star article has the increases that happened on November 1st 2014.
For on peak pricing, the price per kWh is increasing on May 1st from 14 cents to 16.1 cents, a 2.1 cent increase or 15%. The on peak increase on November 1st was from 13.5 cents to 14 cents, a 3.7 increase. Thus the year over year increase, from 13.5 cents to 16.1 cents, is 2.6 cents or a 19.2% increase which is obviously significantly more than Ontario's inflation rate.
For mid-peak, prices will increase on May 1st from 11.4 cents to 12.2 cents, a 0.8 cents increase or 7%. On November 1st, the price increase from 11.2 cents to 11.4 cents, only a 1.8 percent increase. Year on year the increase was 1 cent or an 8.9% increase, again significantly above Ontario's inflation rate.
Finally for off-peak, the increase on May 1st is 0.3 cents, from 7.7 cents to 8 cents, a 3.9% increase. On November 1st, the price increased from 7.5 cents to 7.7 cents, a 0.2 cent increase or a 2.7% increase. Year over year the increase was 0.5 cents from 7.5 to 8 cents, a 6.7% increase, which is well above Ontario's inflation but nowhere near the massive increase in on peak pricing.
The Ontario Liberals have crafted an electricity policy where prices have skyrocketed, despite relatively low natural gas prices and neighbouring states and provinces having seen no such crazy price increases. Starting in January, the 10% Ontario Clean Energy benefit will end, which will give an even bigger boost to electricity prices in Ontario. Unfortunately the media hasn't done a very good job of putting these prices in context.
For another post I'll look at the price increases over two years.
