Ontario and Alberta May 2015 Employment Numbers

Ontario had a massive month over month jobs gain in May 2015, with 43,900 more jobs. Full-time employment was up 31,100 while part-time jobs were up 12,700. From January, employment went up 45,400 so the first four months were pretty pathetic in terms of job growth (working age population went up by 35,800 in that period). That will probably show up in the GDP numbers for Ontario, with the first quarter coming in weak, with the second stronger from May onwards. It will be interesting to see whether May is an anomaly or the start of a stronger trend for job growth in Ontario. Potentially after a weak start for the US economy in 2015, strength there could be seeping into Ontario.

For Alberta, employment went down in May by 6,400. Full time actually went up by 20,200 while
part time was down 26,600. So that's somewhat mixed, although certainly the effect of the crash of oil prices is reducing jobs. More concerning is that jobs are down 6,400 from January indicating a very flat employment situation. However considering that oil is down so much, a flat employment situation is actually pretty good. It will be interesting to see what happens going forward through the summer.

Canada's May 2015 Employment Numbers Are Out and They Are Good

Statscan released the Canadian jobs numbers for May and there was a big jump, up 58,900 compared to a loss of 19,700 jobs in April. One could look at this as the weak first quarter of 2015 continued into April, but now job growth has accelerated in May (and possibly the overall economy has accelerated in May as well).

Both full-time and part-time jobs were up, 30,900 and 27,900 respectively, so there's no trading full-time for part-time jobs that was seen earlier in the year.

Over five months, from the start of the year employment is up 102,300 which isn't nearly as impressive (although still not bad). The labour force was up 133,600 in that time span.

All and all it is an impressive jump for May and maybe the start of a positive trend. I'll look at Ontario's and Alberta's numbers on the weekend.

Canadian First Quarter of 2015 GDP Growth Terrible, What About Ontario's?

I meant to post about Canada's GDP growth in the first quarter last week when the news came out, but I was somewhat slow. In the first quarter, GDP contracted by 0.6% (annualized) almost in line with the contraction in the US of 0.7%.

Now obviously that contraction has a lot to do with crashing oil prices. However saying that poor GDP performance is limited to Alberta would seem to be incorrect. Compared to Ontario's and Quebec's GDP, Alberta's contribution to overall GDP growth is significantly smaller. It is doubtful that Alberta's performance could be that bad and Ontario and Quebec's performance that much better with a 0.6% contraction. Probably at best Ontario posted zero growth, however considering how correlated Ontario's GDP is with US GDP, Ontario also having a negative growth first quarter is certainly possible.

Unfortunately the Ontario government won't announce the provincial GDP number for some time. However it should be remembered in the current budget document that the finance ministry is predicting 2.7% GDP growth for Ontario in 2015. If Ontario had a zero number in the first quarter, I doubt that growth will be strong enough in the remaining three quarters to get to 2.7% (even more amusingly, there's a Canadian bank predicting 3.3% GDP growth for Ontario in 2015 which was made in March!).

US growth is looking better in the second quarter of 2015, but not great (the Atlanta Fed GDPNow forecast for the second quarter is 1.1% at the time of writing). So it seems doubtful that Ontario will have a particularly strong second quarter either. If growth for 2015 is significantly below 2.7%, then tax revenues for Ontario are going to take a hit.

With Ontario's population growth around 0.9%, GDP growth per capita will likely not be much above 1% a year, about where it has been since the last recession. I don't see why that would change.
