Here's an interesting article in the Spec about the HSR switching back to natural gas buses because the price of diesel is so high. I blogged last July the following in this post:
"The Spec has an article
on the HSR buying new diesel buses, replacing natural gas buses.
Considering the cheapness of natural gas (which looks to continue for
years in North America) and the high cost of diesel fuel (based off the
price of crude), I have to wonder why Hamilton is doing this. Obviously
the HSR must have the infrastructure for natural gas if they already
have natural gas buses."
Good to see the HSR is following what I recommended.

Elly Zreik Big Bee Accomplice and Attender of High School Work Shops
The Spec has an article reporting that two new persons have been arrested and charged with second degree murder in the August 4th Big Bee fire that killed Samir Anbari. Those two would be Elly Zreik, 22 and Matthew McLeod, 24.
I looked to see what I could find on the internet for Zreik and found a pdf report from St. Paul's School in Mississauga from 2008 where Zreik was mentioned as attending some workshops:
Considering Zreik is 22 and the school is a high school, I'm pretty sure they're the same person. Maybe the workshops didn't sink in. Haven't been able to find a Facebook page yet.

Police Spending Juggernaut and Festivals
I was interested to read this CBC Hamilton article entitled "Policing Costs Crippling Festival of Friends, Organizer Says", with the organizer being Loren Lieberman (incidentally the Mercantis spokesman for their casino efforts).
I've made posts here before about Hamilton police chief Glenn De Caire's 2013 budget demands which are way above inflation and includes asking for 20 additional officers and one civilian. Lieberman is quoted in the article:
"A $40,000 increase in policing is about 10 per cent of our cash operations,” Loren Lieberman told CBC Hamilton.
and
“It just doesn't make sense,” Lieberman said. “It's a 700 per cent increase in the contracted position from the cops.”
I find this interesting because the Hamilton police force seems to have morphed into an entity that only seeks to increase revenue to itself and its size, whether it be by increased funding directly from the tax payer, shaking down festivals for supposed required protection or writing more tickets.
With regards to the festivals and the police around, I've noticed some weird patterns. Last year for Supercrawl I noticed a fair number of officers on James North at midday. I've made posts here before about Hamilton police chief Glenn De Caire's 2013 budget demands which are way above inflation and includes asking for 20 additional officers and one civilian. Lieberman is quoted in the article:
"A $40,000 increase in policing is about 10 per cent of our cash operations,” Loren Lieberman told CBC Hamilton.

“It just doesn't make sense,” Lieberman said. “It's a 700 per cent increase in the contracted position from the cops.”
I find this interesting because the Hamilton police force seems to have morphed into an entity that only seeks to increase revenue to itself and its size, whether it be by increased funding directly from the tax payer, shaking down festivals for supposed required protection or writing more tickets.
With regards to the festivals and the police around, I've noticed some weird patterns. Last year for Supercrawl I noticed a fair number of officers on James North at midday. Wynne Wins
So much for my elaborate game theory about what would happen in Sandra Pupatello's bye-election if she won. Will she even run now? Will Dwight Duncan resign?
On to Kathleen Wynne. Actually having a seat means the legislature can be called back henceforth, for a throne speech and a budget. Do the opposition parties want an election right away? I would say the opposition would like a bit of legislature time to do more Ornge and gas plant hearings to wound the Liberals even more on these issues. Also the budget isn't going to be particularly fun as Wynne won't have much extra cash to splash around. Restraint is never fun for politicians, especially one of Wynne's predilection.
I'm assuming Wynne's strategy will be to work with Andrea Horwath. Considering what the polls are and the long term goals of Horwath and the NDP, I can't think Horwath will go too long propping up Wynne as the premier. Although short term she may extract some legislation or amendments the Liberals would never normally agree too.
