Hamilton versus GTA Murders, 2011 Edition (Oakville Deathville)

Sadly 5 people were murdered in Hamilton in 2011. However considering the population of Hamilton from wikipedia is 504,559, that's approximately 1 murder per 100,000 people per year, which in relative terms, isn't bad. Hopefully that's cheaper for the Hamilton police department.

This Toronto Star article has some information on 2011 murder statistics for the GTA that are interesting in comparison. Halton had four murders in 2011, with a population estimate for 2011 of 503,600 from wikipedia. That's a murder rate of approximately 0.8 per 100,000 people which is lower than Hamilton's but not remarkably. There was a murder in Burlington, one in Milton and two in Oakville. There's only a 2006 census value for population of 165613 on wikipedia for Oakville. With two murders, that's a rate of 1.2, which is higher than Hamilton. I now dub Oakville Deathville.

Toronto had 45 murders in 2011, compared to a population of 2,503,281 from the 2006 census according to Wikipedia. That's a murder rate of approximately 1.8 per 100,000 people. That's significantly higher than Hamilton's.

So not a bad year in comparison for Hamilton. Hopefully we can be less than five in 2012.
